The salt ranges in thickness from a few inches to 5-feet thick and is blown by the wind to create a perfectly flat surface that shines white under the desert sun.
The lake was expansive, covering a third of the state of Utah and extending into Idaho and Nevada. It was formed by receding water of Lake Bonneville that existed during the last Ice Age 32,000 and 14,000 years ago. The Bonneville Salt Flats are 4,000 square miles of flat, salty ground on the western side of the Great Salt Lake basin in Utah.
